‘Trying not to tear up’ – Carey’s poignant century

Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey said it was “special” to dedicate his century to his late father on the first day of the third Ashes Test at Adelaide Oval.

Carey scored an outstanding 106 runs at home, helping the home team chase the score to 326-8 at the end of the game.

It’s also an emotional time for Carey, whose father died in September. Carey’s wife wept in the crowd as the batsman looked to the sky in celebration.

“Scoring a hundred points in front of the home fans and family is special,” he said.

“I think you know why I looked up at the sky. I was trying not to cry. But, no, it was awesome.

“Mom, brothers, sisters, Eloise and the kids are all here and it’s a special moment.”

Carey’s century was his first in Ashes cricket and followed an impressive performance with the gloves in the second Test in Brisbane.

He was booed by England fans for his performance at Bairstow stumps in the final three Tests of the 2023 Ashes series, but Adelaide fans chanted his name when he reached triple figures.

His century was not without controversy. He admitted that when the Australian wicketkeeper scored 72, he narrowly missed England bowler Josh Tongue’s delivery but it was caught by Jamie Smith.

However, the decision was not overturned and he was not sent off when England reviewed it due to an error by Snico’s technical operator.

Despite the loud noise made by the Snicko technique, TV umpire Chris Gaffaney overruled England’s comments because the ball appeared to be moving away from the bat when the sound occurred.

But it is understood that the reason for the discrepancy is that the sound used for review is taken from the stump microphone at the bowler’s end rather than the striker’s end.

Snicko’s parent company, BBG Sports, has admitted responsibility for the mistake.
