The Algerian official is considered one of the top referees on the continent and was selected to referee the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. His reputation on the international stage is demonstrated by his recent appointment by FIFA to referee the U20 World Cup in Chile from September to October.

According to an official statement from the Algerian Football Federation, Yousef Gamou was ultimately unable to participate in the match due to health reasons. The German Football Federation sent him a message on Saturday wishing him a speedy recovery and confirmed his absence from the continent’s top competition, but gave no further details.
