Purdue’s Branden Smith becomes 2nd Division I player with 1,500 points, 850 assists, 550 rebounds

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Purdue guard Brayden Smith wasted no time in reaching another milestone Saturday, becoming the second men’s basketball player in Division I history to score 1,500 points, 850 assists and 550 rebounds in a career.

Smith had his first assist against Marquette, passing to Fletcher Loyer for a 3-pointer just 12 seconds into the game to give the sixth-ranked Boilermakers a 3-0 lead. He came into the game with 1,508 points, a school-record 849 assists and 574 rebounds.

Another player to achieve this feat is DJ Cooper, who had 2,075 points, 934 assists and 620 rebounds while playing at Ohio State from 2009-13.

Smith ranks second on the Big Ten’s career assists list. Only Cassius Winston has more, scoring 890 points while playing at Michigan State from 2017-20.
