Former University of Michigan head football coach Sherron Moore was sentenced to prison Wednesday night, just hours after he was relieved of his duties as leader of the storied program.
Moore was booked into the jail Wednesday at 10:11 p.m. ET, according to Washtenaw County jail records. Moore remained in jail as of early Thursday morning, according to jail records.

The county records system accessed by CNN Sports did not have any information on the charges Moore could face, no bail information was available and there was no scheduled court date.
In response to a request for information about the Moore incident, Pittsfield Township police issued a news release saying officers responded to the 3000 block of Salt Road in Ann Arbor to investigate an alleged assault. Police confirmed a suspect was in custody and the incident “does not appear to be random”.
“The investigation is currently ongoing. Due to the nature of the allegations, the need to maintain the integrity of the investigation, and the current status of the investigation, we are prohibited from releasing further details,” Pittsfield Township police wrote in a statement. “Additional details regarding this incident will be released as soon as permitted.”
The release did not specifically mention Moore by name.

The announcement comes after ESPN reported earlier last night that police in Saline, Michigan, a town west of Pittsfield, both outside Ann Arbor, home to the University of Michigan campus, had detained Moore.
According to ESPN, Moore has been turned over to Pittsfield Township police for further investigation.
The university fired Moore on Wednesday after the school said he had an “inappropriate relationship with a faculty member.”
It was suddenly announced that Moore was fired immediately and with cause.
“Following a university investigation, credible evidence was discovered that Coach Moore had an inappropriate relationship with a staff member,” the University of Michigan statement read.

“Such behavior is a clear violation of university policy and UM maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.”
Moore becomes the Wolverines’ head coach in 2024, succeeding Jim Harbaugh after six years on the offensive staff. He is the first black head coach in program history.
Moore led the Wolverines to a 9-3 record this season. The Wolverines are scheduled to face Texas in the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Eve.
Moore served as acting head coach twice in 2023, while Harbaugh was suspended twice separately – once for recruiting violations and the other for Connor Stallion’s signature-stealing scandal. He coached the final three games of the season, leading the Wolverines to wins over Penn State, Maryland State and a dramatic victory over No. 2 Ohio State.

Harbaugh returned in the playoffs and Moore resumed his offensive coordination duties, helping Michigan win the national championship.
It was a history-making moment when Moore was named head coach after Harbaugh left the Los Angeles Chargers. In 2024, the Wolverines again beat Ohio State to end the regular season and beat Alabama in the bowl game.
But this year, it was his turn to be suspended. After the NCAA finally ruled on the long-running incident, he missed two games as he was involved in the Stallions’ investigation.
Biff Poggi has been named interim head coach, the school added.
