Tuesday Bantering: Jays Notes – Yahoo Sports

Yesterday there was some news about Team Jay:

  • Ross Atkins was asked about negotiations with Beau Bichette. “The conversations I have with him, I’ll keep that between Beau and me,” Rose said, not surprisingly.

  • The Red Sox have also spoken with Bichette. I don’t want to see him in a Red Sox uniform. But I’m not surprised that he’s talking to the Red Sox or that they’re talking loudly about talking to the Red Sox. I think Beau’s plan is to talk to everyone and see how much he can get, then go back to the Jays and ask if they can match it or beat it.

  • Kyle Tucker spoke with the Yankees after visiting the Blue Jays’ spring training facility. Brian Cashman said Tucker “did not visit the Yankees complex.” I won’t read too much into this. But Cashman also said they have become too “lefty.” I kind of hoped something would happen to him.

  • The Blue Jays have been talking to Roberto Suarez. He had 40 saves (five shutouts) last year. Suarez will be 35 years old by the start of next season. He played four seasons with the Padres, the last two as their closer. I’m sure they’ve talked to every closer in free agency.

  • Former Jayhawks pitcher Steven Matz signed a two-year contract. He’s been pitching out of the bullpen the past few years.

  • Jose Berrios was “not happy” that he was left off the World Series roster and decided to go home rather than watch his teammates. I never read too much into any of this stuff, and I figured that if the Jayhawks didn’t trade him, he’d still be back this spring and try to make sure they didn’t keep him off any playoff roster next year.

  • Ross Atkins says ‘Sean Bieber expected to be ready for Opening Day’ I don’t know if he’s ready.

  • They view Cody Ponce as their starting pitcher. Not surprising either.

  • They view Luis Varander as a reliever.

  • Trey Yesavich will have no innings limit next year.

  • Jon Heyman says the Blue Jays are interested in Kotel Marte. He’s been great for three straight years and would be a perfect fit at No. 2 if Beau signs with someone else.
