Moore highlights underrated newcomers who could contribute early

Ann Arbor, Michigan—— Somewhat lost in the hubbub surrounding coaching changes, the CFP and teams entering their respective bowl games, last week was the early signing period and the Michigan football team managed to bring in 27 players.

Although we won’t get as much early attention as we once did due to NCAA rule changes to early enrollees and practices, there are a lot of young players who should be able to help the Wolverines right away. It should come as no surprise to anyone that head coach Sherrone Moore drafted a player who can make an immediate impact.

“We’ll see. There are a lot of them,” Moore said. “I think it’s a special group of freshmen, the guys that are coming in. Talk about the guys that are coming in early and stuff like that. We’ll see.

“Obviously, I think Savion Hitt’s talent is special. I think he can do that. Probably be one of the wide receivers. Really excited about those guys. The linebackers are all going to play. It’s a great group. So are the corners. The linebackers. It’s a complete group. We’ll see at the end of spring training. I’ll be able to answer that better as we get into the summer.”

Hitt and the wide receiver corps are certainly names everyone will be keeping an eye on given their pedigree coming from high school. Edge rusher Carter Meadows can also be counted in this group.

But what about the players who didn’t get the honor? Those who may not have had a starring role in the hiring process? After all, Michigan has done a good job of luring less high-profile players over the years, with guys like Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant.

Moore included two players who he felt didn’t get the attention they needed compared to their talent levels, one of whom he compared to the aforementioned Graham.

“The one I think is really going to be a special guy is Markie Walbridge,” Moore said. “He was recruited but not recruited. He and Allister were really good. When you watch his (Alister Vallejo’s) film, he looks like Mason. You can’t say, hey, you’re going to be like Mason Graham. Mason Graham was a top-10 pick. That’s big for this kid. His moves, his tics, his ability to get out of blocks, that’s what it is.

“I’m really excited about the whole class. It’s a fun class with a lot of kids, families, and a lot of good players.”
