“The longevity doesn’t surprise me. There was nothing wrong with his body, no body fat. He always took care of himself,” Friedel continued.
“But mentally, he’s been enduring so many high-pressure situations for club and country since he left Tottenham. What’s remarkable is that he still wants to do that.
“I played until I was 44. You have to still want to do it.
“Off the pitch he is a very gentle, very calm person, a very good person, a family man. No one would say anything negative about him.
“On the court, he’s just one of those players who sees things two or three steps ahead of everyone else. That’s not coachable.

“Certain players only know top-level football during their career. He was and is one of those players.
“Technically incredible touch, great vision and passer, wide range of passes. He can find space any time he wants to, but he doesn’t panic if he can’t find it.
“When he has the ball, 99 times out of 100 he finds a solution to get the team out of a difficult situation.
Finally, Friedel noted that Modric is a “top person and a top midfielder.”
