If you lose or damage your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you don’t want to lose all your data. Think of all the pictures, videos, messages, passwords, and other files on your smartphone. If you lose or damage a piece of equipment, you could end up losing a large part of your life. There’s a simple and effective way to ensure you never lose data – backup.
Fortunately, on iOS, backing up is easy and most people don’t have to pay anything to do it. There are two ways to back up data: iTunes and iCloud. This guide will walk you through two data backup methods.
How to back up iPhone via iCloud
If you don’t have a PC or Mac, backing up on iCloud may be your best option. The free tier on iCloud only offers 5GB of storage, which may mean you have to pay a small amount of Rs. $75 (or $1) per month gets you 50GB of iCloud storage, which should be enough for iCloud backups and other uses, such as using iCloud Photo Library to store photos.
Follow the steps below to make sure your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is regularly backed up on iCloud.
- On your iOS 10 device, open set up > Click your name at the top > iCloud > iCloud backup.
- Click the button next to iCloud Backup to turn it on. If it’s green, backup is on.
- tap Back up now If you want to start the backup manually.
This will back up important data like accounts, documents, health data, and more. Backup occurs automatically when your iOS device is locked, charged, and connected to a Wi-Fi network.
iCloud backups are preferred because they occur automatically without any action on your part, ensuring your backups are up to date.
When you log in to another iOS device using this iCloud account, you will be asked if you want to restore from backup.
How to back up iPhone via iTunes
Backing up your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch via iTunes is a better option in many ways—it’s free, it also lets you back up purchased apps (so you don’t have to reinstall apps if you switch to a new iOS device), and it doesn’t require the Internet. However, this also means you have to plug your iOS device into your PC or Mac and install iTunes if you haven’t already. You’ll also need to plug your phone into this computer every time you want to back up your device, unless your computer is always on and connected to the same Wi-Fi as your phone (read on for details).
Please follow the steps below to back up your iOS device via iTunes:
- Connect your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to your PC or Mac.
- Open iTunes on your PC or Mac (it may launch automatically when your iPhone is connected).
- If you use a passcode on your iOS device, unlock it.
- You may see a prompt asking if you want to trust this computer. tap believe.

You can choose Automatically syncs when connected to iPhone When iPhone is connected to this computer, iTunes will automatically launch and back up your iPhone.
You can also use Sync with this iPhone over Wi-Fi Let iTunes back up your phone wirelessly, but you’ll need to make sure your computer and iTunes are running for this option to work. When this option is enabled, your iPhone will try to use iTunes to back up to that computer while it’s charging and connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer. This is convenient if you can’t always plug your iPhone into your computer.
To restore from iTunes backup, you need to connect your iPhone/iPad/iPod touch to the same computer.
