There were a few shades of scarlet and gray on the women’s Olympic hockey podium on Thursday. All told, eight former or current Ohio State women’s lacrosse players earned medals Wednesday after completing gold and bronze medal games in Milan, Italy.
Team USA defeated Canada 2-1 in overtime, with three Buckeyes playing important roles in the game. Current Buckeyes, Joey Dunn, and former OSU players Kayla Barnes and Hannah Bielka will return as gold medalists thanks to Team USA’s dominance in the Olympics, in which the U.S. won every game and the only close game against Canada to take home the gold medal.

Speaking of Team Canada, four former Ohio State players helped Team Canada win the silver medal. Jenn Gardiner, Sophie Jaques, Emma Maltais and Natalie Spooner all contributed to the campaign of our northern neighbours. Gardner and Spooner each scored a goal in the game, while Jacques and Maltheis provided assists in the game.
Last but not least, the former OSU goalie and current Swiss goalkeeper led the Swiss team to a bronze medal finish. In the bronze medal game, she conceded just one goal against Sweden, helping her team beat Sweden 2-1 in overtime. She had a stellar game, stopping 161 of 169 shots.
I can only imagine the warm reception Dunn will receive when she resumes playing against Ohio State. Maybe, just maybe, there will be more hardware in the future and this time the Buckeyes hope to compete for a national championship.
