The Fresno High School student who collapsed and died on campus has been identified as 14-year-old Daniel Padilla Jr.

Fresno Unified officials said the incident occurred when Padilla fell while playing basketball in gym class.

He was taken to hospital where he later died.

Students on campus said they were shocked by the emergency and devastated to learn that their classmates did not survive.

“Our thoughts are with our students’ families, friends and school community during this extremely difficult time,” the district said in a statement.

We recognize that the death of a student impacts our Fresno High School community. We have a team of mental health professionals at Fresno High School to provide social-emotional support to students who may have been affected by or triggered by this tragedy. “

The district has not released additional information.
