  • Summer Robert was diagnosed with macromastia, a condition that causes excessive growth of breast tissue, at age 25

  • The 28-year-old content creator has gone up more than 11 bra sizes in the last year due to hormonal surges and currently wears an R cup size

  • Although she struggled to find appropriate and adequate medical care due to a lack of research, Macromatia affected every aspect of Robert’s life

When Summer Robert started wearing C-cup bras at age 8, she knew something was different about her body. It took her fifteen years to get answers.

At age 25, Robert was diagnosed with macromastia, a condition that causes excessive growth of the breasts. Today, the 28-year-old is 4 feet 11 inches tall and wears an R cup bra. She told People magazine that she went up a total of 11 bra sizes in the last year, a testament to the way doctors interpreted the manifestations of her macromastia.

“Basically, I went through a growth spurt,” she said, explaining that the rapid growth was triggered by hormones. As the medical professional explained to Robert, her change in cup size over the last year was due to common hormonal changes experienced by many women in their 20s. Robert’s transformation was far more dramatic, although beyond that, little is known about his condition.

“I started going to doctors when I was 14 or 13 and no one diagnosed me. No one told me I had this condition,” she told People. “They all say it’s puberty. They all say I have to lose weight. It’s ridiculous.”

Robert said only a few doctors know enough about macrophthalmia to recognize it and fully explain it to patients. When she was diagnosed, she remembers how her doctor “printed out a Wikipedia page and gave me the Wikipedia page.”

Robert was born and raised in Scotland and faced almost constant issues with hypersexualization growing up. She endured years of being catcalled in the street, breaking dress codes at school, and as an adult every aspect of her life was affected by her macrophthalmia. In recent years, however, she’s come to love and accept her body, a confidence she attributes to a career transition: About two years ago, she started creating content on OnlyFans.

Still, her physical abnormality remains a hindrance to her daily life. For one thing, Robert told PEOPLE she had trouble finding clothes, especially given her disproportionate breast and waist sizes. Everything she wears has to be “super stretchy,” she said. “Nine times out of 10, it still doesn’t fit… It’s just the everyday things you think are easy, it’s so difficult.”

Macrophthalmia also took a toll on Robert’s body. She says almost any form of “physical activity” requires her to wear a back brace, whether it’s walking for long periods of time or doing something as simple as cleaning her house. She wanted to join a gym, but said that wasn’t really an option.

The Brit had consulted medical professionals about breast reduction surgery, but her megamastia made the solution somewhat futile. They argue that such a program may be effective, but not in the long run.

“We spoke with a breast reduction specialist and he told me they had just come back. He said, ‘If this is really causing you a lot of stress, you can definitely get a breast reduction,'” Robert explained. In fact, she may eventually undergo surgery, but she’s not rushing to the operating room just yet.

“[The doctor] Say, ‘I suggest you actually cut the price. It’s just when you think your body can’t take it anymore,” she added. “They’ll come back, but not super, super fast. “
