Wolves hierarchy admit they got summer transfers ‘wrong’

Wolves technical director Matt Jackson admits they made “mistakes” in their summer transfer business.

Last summer, Wolves sold Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri to Manchester United and Manchester City for a total of £92.5 million.

Meanwhile, captain Nelson Semedo left the club on a free transfer.

The Central team signed six first-team players including Phil Lopez, John Arias, David Moller-Wolf, Tolu Arokodare, Ladislav Krejji and Jackson Chachua.

But Wolves’ transfer did not succeed and they experienced a disastrous 2025-26 season.

They are currently bottom of the Premier League with just 2 points from 15 games.

Speaking to BBC Radio WM, the club’s technical director Jackson admitted the mistakes they made during the summer.

He said: “The players brought in were brought in for the right reasons but when you get two points at this stage you have to say it was a mistake because whatever starting XI we put out was not good enough.

“We’re confident in the development of these players. Their ability and willingness to progress is outstanding – but you want immediate rewards.

“It’s difficult with the way we go into the market for players. We don’t have endless resources, so we try to find players in markets that others aren’t necessarily looking for.”

Relegation is almost inevitable for Wolves, who have not won in the Premier League since April.

They sacked Vito Pereira in November and replaced the Portuguese with Rob Edwards.

But things have not improved under the former Middlesbrough boss, who has lost all four of his games in charge.

The players tried their best but a lack of quality meant they didn’t get the results they expected.

Unless Edwards can pull off a dramatic comeback, Wolves will almost certainly be relegated to the Championship.

They hope to bring in some quality players in the winter transfer window, but it remains questionable whether players will be willing to join a club fighting to avoid relegation.
