WNBA and players union have aligned on key elements for a new collective bargaining agreement

NEW YORK (AP) — The WNBA and its players union have reached a verbal agreement on the terms of a transformative new collective bargaining agreement, pending approval by the league’s Board of Governors and players, in an effort to start the season on time.

Specific details still need to be worked out in the coming weeks. The deal is expected to significantly increase player salaries.

The agreement was reached after more than 100 hours of intense face-to-face negotiations over the past eight days.

The league will now sprint over the next two months to ensure the season starts on time. Toronto and Portland need to conduct expansion drafts with new teams. In addition, teams need to negotiate with more than 80% of free agents this offseason.

Training camps will open in late April and the season will begin on May 8.
