Transfer activity among elite five-star high school quarterbacks in the 2023 and 2024 recruiting classes has become commonplace. In fact, Manning is the only one of eight top signal-callers who has yet to enter the transfer portal, according to CBS Sports’ Emily Proud.

Nico Iamaleava jumped from Tennessee to UCLA this offseason. Dante Moore was at Westwood before him but later went to Oregon State. Jackson Arnold is headed to Auburn from Oklahoma State and could be on the move again. Malachi Nelson followed a similar path from USC to Boise State before UTEP. Heisman Trophy finalist Julian Saine came to Ohio State from Alabama with the encouragement of Nick Saban.

Manning’s commitment to Texas is noteworthy. Since arriving on campus, he’s struggled with continued volatility in college football’s quarterback ranks.

The nephew of NFL Hall of Famers Peyton and Eli Manning is one of the most highly anticipated recruits in recent years. Despite high expectations, he remained at Texas while many other highly rated quarterbacks chose to pursue opportunities elsewhere. It’s a broader trend in college football, with the sport accelerating.

When you consider that the past four Heisman Trophy winners have all been transfers (including Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza), you’d think this would become a normal part of college football.
