Winter Storm Warning Announced as 36 Inches of Snow, Dangerous Winds Expected

The Pacific Northwest is facing more dangerous weather this week, with heavy rain and snow once again dominating the region.

“Rainfall amounts of 2 to 12 inches over the past few days, with localized amounts as high as 17 inches, have increased soil moisture to very high levels in western Washington. Such large amounts of rain will put additional stress on unstable soils, leading to an increased threat of landslides and debris flows, especially in recently burned areas,” a report from The Weather Channel said earlier this week.

Heavy snow expected in northern Cascades of Rockies

On Tuesday, December 16, the National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for much of Washington, which could see up to three feet of snow.

“Heavy snow will develop across much of the northern Cascades tonight following a strong cold front, then expand into the southern Cascades starting Wednesday morning,” the National Weather Service said. “Several feet of snow is expected to accumulate in the Cascade and Olympic areas by Thursday morning.”

“Rain and mountain snow are spreading into the northern Rockies, with accumulations of 1-2 feet possible Wednesday (isolated amounts could be higher). Wind, winter and flood-related watches and warnings will be in effect for much of the Northwest for at least the next several days.”

Snow totals ranged from 10 to 20 inches at Stevens Pass and 18 to 36 inches at Mount Baker. Wind gusts as high as 65 mph.

NWS warns against travel to area

The National Weather Service issued a stern warning about travel in the region, saying “travel may be very difficult or even impossible.” For those who decide to travel, the National Weather Service urges extra precautions and supplies.

“If you must travel, keep extra flashlights, food and water in your car just in case. Be prepared for possible power outages. People should consider postponing all travel. If travel is absolutely necessary, motorists should use extreme caution.”

A winter weather advisory is in effect from Tuesday morning until 10 p.m. Pacific Time on Wednesday, December 17.
