Williams’ 22 pushes N.C. State over Boston College 79-71

CHESTnut Hill, Mass. (AP) — Darrion Williams scored 22 points and hit four 3-pointers and North Carolina State withstood a second-half surge to beat Boston College 79-71 on Tuesday night in ACC action.

Williams shot 8 of 18 from the field and 4 of 7 from beyond the arc for NC State (5 of 11, 2-1), shooting 48% overall and 13 of 22 from 3-point range. Terrence Arseno, who came off the bench, hit 3 three-pointers and scored 12 points, while Matt Able had 11 points and 6 rebounds.

NC State led 40-32 at halftime and maintained control throughout the night with timely outside shooting. Alyn Breed opened the second half with a pull-up jumper, then Paul McNeil Jr. hit a three-pointer to extend the lead to nine points. When Boston College cut the deficit to three midway through the half, the Wolfpack responded with a short run, a tip-in by Moussa Sagna.

Boston College (7-8, 0-2) continued to trail Fred Payne, who tied his career high with 22 points in 11:22 of the second half. Payne made 7 of 13 shots from the field, including 3 of 6 three-pointers, scoring 24 points and 7 of 8 from the free throw line.

Williams hit two three-pointers in the final four minutes to bring the score to double digits. McNeil hit a three-pointer in the final seconds, and NC State tied the score at the free throw line.
