seattle – After the Seattle area experiences a period of near-record heat and sunshine, the chance of snow increases heading into the work week as more precipitation moves in and freezing temperatures return each weekday morning.
Will it snow in Seattle this week?
On President’s Day morning, FOX 13 is forecasting a scattered rain and snow mix for the western Washington lowlands. The chance of low-elevation snowflakes tomorrow is slim for several reasons, including the fact that moisture won’t arrive until temperatures have risen a few degrees above freezing. Early mornings can be dry.
Once rain arrives, if it’s heavy enough, it may locally cool the atmosphere, reducing snow levels on the surface. Even so, the shower doesn’t look very impressive. Accumulation is unlikely. If something were to stay briefly early on, it would be isolated and largely limited to patio furniture and grass surfaces—even if that’s an extension.
Bottom line: This doesn’t seem like a big deal. Early driving will be dry. From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., slippery roads may slow you down. Any wet flakes will turn to moderate rainfall in the afternoon, with highs in the mid-40s Monday.
Area ski resorts will see a slight increase in snowpack levels due to insufficient snowfall this winter.
For the Cascades, reports suggest up to two feet of snow could fall in the coming week, including Washington ski resorts that are in need of snow this year.
Snowfall levels will drop from around 3,000 feet on Sunday to 500 feet later this week. Some much-needed snow will return to the mountains on Monday, with more opportunities coming this week.
After a dry Sunday, we will soon have cooler weather with a chance for showers throughout the week, with a daily chance of mixed with wet snowflakes. Temperatures will be cold overnight, with temperatures near freezing each morning.
Washington’s snowpack is only about 40% of average heading into February, and the chances of making up that amount by the end of the season are quickly declining.
Skiers on Snoqualmie Pass said the weather felt more like spring on February 5, 2014, with thinner coverage and fewer visitors.
