A Georgia high school teacher who died as a result of a late-night prank on high school students is demanding that all charges against the students involved be dropped.
Five North Hall High School students were arrested after carrying toilet paper to the Gainesville home of math teacher Jason Hughes in a long-standing prank tradition. Hughes, 40, is the intended target on Thursday night.
The Hall County Sheriff’s Office said Hughes was walking toward the street when the group tried to leave in two separate vehicles, tripping and falling into the slippery road. He was then run over by a car driven by 18-year-old Jayden Ryan Wallace.
His wife, Laura, told The New York Times that the father-of-two did not angrily confront but was “excitedly waiting to catch them in the act.”

“This is a terrible tragedy, and our family is determined to prevent another tragedy from happening and ruining the lives of these students,” Hughes said. “This would go against Jason’s lifelong commitment to investing in the lives of these children.”

Both Mr. and Mrs. Hughes were public school teachers and devoted their lives to teaching. According to the New York Post, the prank has turned into an ongoing battle in which students lose “points” if teachers find out about their behavior.

In addition to being a math teacher at the high school, the school’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes posted on its Facebook that Hughes was also the school’s golf coach.
“Our hearts are broken,” the school said in a statement to FOX 5. “Jason Hughes was a loving husband, devoted father, a passionate teacher, mentor and coach who was loved and respected by his students and colleagues. He gave so much to so many people in so many ways. Our hearts and prayers are with his wife and family. We ask that the media and public respect their privacy as they mourn.”
