President Donald Trump’s desire for drama clashed with his self-destructive tendencies, his biographer says.

Author Michael Wolff, show co-host Inside Trump’s head The president’s personality traits were reflected in this week’s negotiations over Greenland, the podcast said. Ultimately, Trump backed away from his demand that the United States acquire the entire semi-autonomous island and his threat to impose tariffs on several European countries before a deal could be reached.

“Always remember, Donald Trump, like everything else, is incredibly self-destructive,” Wolff told co-host Joanna Coles. “He’s created a huge mess for himself… I think Greenland was a silver bullet pointed at his head, and maybe we’ll forget that, but I don’t think we’ll forget Minneapolis.”

Wolf said Trump is short-sighted and his policy goals should be viewed as a means to redirect public attention back to himself and distract from the ICE shooting in Minneapolis earlier this month.

“Greenland came about because he posted in the middle of the night [what] into his mind… and then it took on a life of its own, which had the benefit of distracting from the last thing that had a life of its own. “

Wolf went on to say that the 79-year-old president would continue down this path as the midterm elections approach.

“He would sacrifice Republicans for … the ‘Trump Show,'” Wolf said. “The Greenland thing is not, in anyone’s language, politically astute. It’s just about Trump, Trump is the center of this thing, Trump creates, and for all these people to pay attention, people put him at the center of everything.”

Wolff later recalled what a Trump insider once told him about the nature of the president’s desire for conflict and headlines, even if they make him look bad.

“I think one Trump person said to me, ‘You know…he’s not really interested in or focused on setting fires. What he’s really into is fire trucks rushing up to put out fires.'” I think that’s the thing: He’s not thriving on politics, or even political success. “

The White House questioned Wolf’s credibility when reached for comment.

“Michael Wolf is a lying bastard and a proven liar. He often spins stories based on his own sick and twisted imagination simply because he suffers from severe and debilitating Trump Derangement Syndrome, which has rotted away his peanut-sized brain,” said White House Communications Director Steven Chang.

Wolf also said on the podcast that when Trump leaves politics, or if he leaves politics, he will take his support base with him.

“With the arrival of Donald Trump, that’s gone,” Wolf told Coles. “Donald Trump is irreplaceable. He is an absolutely unique figure. No one will ever be Donald Trump again, and the entire MAGA movement is against Trump. This is not an ideological America. I often try to make a distinction: This is not a political base, but a fan base.”
