The Kenyan midfielder joined the Hoops from Belgian side Bierschot under Neil Lennon and quickly became a fan favorite during his two seasons at the club.
One of his most memorable moments came in the 2012 Champions League when he headed home Barcelona’s 2-1 win before Tony Watt’s iconic seal of victory.

Celtic also benefited financially from his rise, initially signing him for just £900,000 before selling him to Southampton for £12.5m.

He later followed Mauricio Pochettino to Tottenham Hotspur and spent a total of seven years in England’s top flight. Despite Wanyama’s success elsewhere, he has always had a deep affection for his time at Celtic.
Wanyama spoke through East Africa and said: “I’ve been treated very well at every European club I’ve played for. But I think I feel even more loved at Celtic. The fans there adore me. It’s a great feeling and experience.

“Contrary to what a lot of people think, football is not a sport where you make friends. Friendships in football are different. Yes, you might get along with your teammates, but because of the nature of the sport, there’s not really a time when you can have a mutual connection with your teammates.
“One minute you might be playing for this team and the next minute you’re sold to another club so you go there and start your life over again. Or a team-mate you feel close to moves to another club.
“Also, in Europe no one has time for you and it makes you realize how important your family is because they will always be there for you. That explains why you always find me with my family. I am very close to all my brothers and sisters.”
