Why SRH needs a big win over RCB to secure top two spots in IPL 2026

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s battle for the top two spots in the IPL 2026 league stage has now entered the final match before the playoffs, with the Royal Challengers Bangalore Test awaiting them on Friday.

Finishing in the top two is very important because the teams in Qualifier 1 still have a chance to reach the finals despite losing their first game of the playoffs.

Why NRR is important for SRH

With RCB and Gujarat Titans locked on 18 points, with the latter having played 14 league games, a regular win won’t be enough for SRH as the net run rate (NRR) will determine their standing at the end of the league phase.

According to ESPNcricinfo’s predictions, SRH will need to do the unthinkable to advance to the top two:

  • If SRH score 220 runs, they will need 88 runs to win.

  • If they scored 200 runs, they would have to win by 87 runs.

  • If chasing 150 points, they need to win within 11.1-11.3 overs.

RCB are safe in the top two with their stellar NRR, but if SRH meet these conditions tonight, they can knock GT out of the second spot.

Why top two and first place in qualifiers means a lot to SRH

Hyderabad’s top two spots mean they will play in Qualifier 1 rather than go straight to the knockout rounds (although only SRH have managed to win the IPL so far).

Those who fail in the knockout round will be eliminated directly, while those who fail in Qualifier 1 will at least get another chance to prove themselves in Qualifier 2. Many IPL finalists and even winners have enjoyed a second chance in their careers in this league.

RCB have been very strong this year; however, Sunrisers Hyderabad have an explosive batting order that can make a significant difference in the NRR in just one game.

Cricket News Review: SRH’s explosive batting gives them chance of an unlikely top-two finish

Due to the run-rate differential, this chase might give Sunrisers Hyderabad the best chance of vying for the top two spots in IPL 2026.

SRH should first restrict RCB to low scores and finish the chase in 11 overs or less depending on the target, thereby creating enough net run-rate difference for them to put them in the lead.

This strategy could suit SRH well considering the attacking style of players in their ranks such as Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head and Heinrich Klaasen who can attack right from the start.

However, the task will be tough given that RCB have maintained a high net run-rate differential throughout the tournament.
