What Is Real Madrid’s Path In The Champions League Playoffs?

Real Madrid will once again take the long route in the Champions League.

Like last season, Real Madrid failed to crack the top eight in the first stage and ended the league stage in ninth place. This position prevents Alvaro Arbeloa’s side from automatically qualifying for the last 16.

As a result, Madrid will now be forced into the play-offs. However, finishing ninth does provide one important advantage: Real Madrid will play the second leg of their playoff tie at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Benfica or Bode/Grinter await in the playoffs

Real Madrid’s playoff opponents will be determined in Friday’s draw, with the club facing Benfica or Bode/Glimt. Real Madrid will go into the draw knowing their potential opponents in advance, but will still have to wait to find out which team they will actually face.

Possible round of 16 matchups: Sporting Lisbon or Manchester City

If Real Madrid manages to advance to the playoffs, the next hurdle could be significant. In the round of 16, Real Madrid will face either Sporting Lisbon or Manchester City, potentially leading to a knockout tie.

  • The top eight clubs entering the league stage.

UEFA will draw lots for the round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals at the same time.

The Round of 16 will be held in March:

  • First leg: March 10-11

  • Second leg: March 17-18
