West Ham wanted to sign Chiesa in January

West Ham United are interested in signing Federico Chiesa in the winter transfer window, according to Calciomercato .

West Ham are looking for attacking reinforcements and were reportedly interested in Chiesa, but Liverpool have refused to sell without signing a replacement.

Instead, the Hammers signed Adama Traore for a pittance. He has experience working with manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

Traore doesn’t particularly light up the London Stadium, but he provides strong attacking depth that will be useful as West Ham seek to escape the relegation zone.

As for Chiesa, his search for game time continues and he is almost certain to leave Merseyside this summer.

West Ham may reconsider a move for the Italy international (51 caps), especially if they can get his club to compromise on their €15-20m valuation.

The 28-year-old has three goals and three assists in 27 games (634 minutes), showing that he can still perform at the highest level.

However, committing significant sums of money to Chiesa would be a gamble that West Ham cannot afford.

The winger’s career has been interrupted by injuries multiple times, preventing him from establishing sustained momentum or consistency.

Even during his time at Liverpool, his stellar performances were overshadowed by fitness issues and limited space available.

For a team that wants consistent results, reliability should be the top priority.

There are also concerns that Chiesa has lost the explosive acceleration that once made him one of the most feared wide players in Europe.

Without the blistering pace we saw in Italy’s Euro 2020 triumph, his ability to beat defenders and stretch the opposition backline would be diminished.

West Ham already have depth in their rotation with Traore, who fits Nuno’s direct attacking style at the London Stadium.

The Hammers would be wiser to pursue younger, more dynamic, broad-based talent with greater long-term upside rather than investing heavily in risky options.
