Virginia Tech coach asks ‘What the f*** am I doing wrong?’ after costly loss to rival Virginia

Virginia Tech head coach Mike Young became emotional after the Hokies lost 76-72 to Virginia Tech in the regular-season finale on Saturday.

“What did I do wrong?” Young said after the game.

Virginia Tech finished the regular season with a 19-12 overall record and an 8-10 record in the ACC. The Hokies are currently trying to make the NCAA Tournament.

Young has served as Virginia Tech’s head coach since 2019. He compiled a 192-97 overall record at Virginia Tech and a 60-70 record in the ACC. Young was named the 2021 ACC Coach of the Year.

Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock told Mark Berman of the Roanoke Times that Young will return next season even though they haven’t made an NCAA tournament appearance in three years.

Before Young left for Virginia Tech, he served as Wofford’s head coach for 17 seasons. Wofford had a 299-244 overall record and a 173-124 record in the Southern Conference, and Young was a four-time Coach of the Year.

Young also served as an assistant coach at Wofford for 13 seasons. After his playing career with Emery Henry, he also served as an assistant coach at Emery Henry and Redford.

Virginia Tech is now headed to the ACC Tournament. The first day of competition is Tuesday. Virginia Tech won the ACC Championship in 2022 under Young.
