Victor Wembanyama ‘very much’ could return to court Saturday in NBA Cup semifinals

Los Angeles– Before the San Antonio Spurs beat the Lakers on Wednesday night, which he watched in street clothes, Victor Wembanyam took to the court for some light drills. He looks good, moves well and doesn’t have any wraps on his strained calf.

Is there any chance we’ll see Wembanyama in action against the Thunder in the NBA Cup semifinals on Saturday in Las Vegas?

“Absolutely love it,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said after the Spurs’ win. “He had a very good day today. He had a very intense day this morning and we’ll have to see how he reacts and reacts tomorrow.”

Wimby is reportedly close to returning, and it was a good sign Wednesday night that he was on the field for pregame drills after an intense workout earlier in the day.

Wembanyama has been sidelined since November 15 with a calf strain and has missed more than a dozen games. Led by inspiring play from the guard trio of De’Aaron Fox, Stephen Castle and Dylan Harper, the Spurs are 9-3 in those 12 games, including a win over the Lakers on Wednesday to advance to the NBA Cup semifinals in Las Vegas.

Already an All-Star, Wimby looked to have taken another leap this season, averaging 26.2 points, 12.9 rebounds and 3.6 blocks per game before his injury. He looks like an All-NBA player, and in his third season, he might even get a lot of MVP votes.

The Spurs need that guy to take on the 24-1 Thunder in Saturday’s NBA Cup semifinals in Las Vegas.
