Vanecek earns 1st shutout of the season, 100th career win in Utah’s 3-0 victory over the Flyers

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Vitek Vanecek stopped 16 shots and Dylan Guenther assisted on both Utah State goals as the Mammoths defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 3-0 on Thursday night in his 100th career win.

Nick Schmaltz and Clayton Keller scored for the Mammoths in the second period, and Michael Cacone scored an empty-net goal at 18:12 of the third period.

Vanecek earned his first shutout of the season and the 11th of his career. The 30-year-old has four shutouts in 2021-22 with the Washington Capitals.

Utah has won two straight games and five of its last seven while completing a two-game season sweep of the Flyers.

Dan Vladar made 20 saves for Philadelphia, which fell to 19-10-6. The Flyers’ three-game winning streak was snapped.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Mammoths outscored the Flyers 14-7 in the second quarter to take a lead they never relinquished.

Schmalz opened the scoring for his team at 1:38 of the second period when he shot from a difficult angle on the right side of Vladar. Guenther and Sean Durzi assisted Schmaltz’s 24th goal of the season.

About seven minutes later, Keller scored his 19th goal of the season to extend the lead to two goals. Gunther got his 25th assist when Keller was all alone with a pass off the boards, beating Vladar from close range at 8:03.

Keller leads the Mammoths with 61 points (19 goals, 42 assists). Schmalz is second with 57 points (24 goals and 33 assists), followed by Gunther with 53 points (28 goals and 25 assists). The Mammoths have scored 94 goals on the road this season.

Veteran defenseman MacKenzie Weegar, whom Utah acquired from Calgary, was unavailable Wednesday due to visa processing. The Mammoths recalled defenseman Dmitry Simashev from Tucson of the American Hockey League.

Flyers forward Travis Konecny ​​(upper body injury) and guard Nick Seeler (lower body injury) were sidelined.
