UW QB enters transfer portal, signed multi-million-dollar contract with school days earlier

University of Washington star quarterback Demond Williams Jr. has announced he will enter the transfer portal, just four days after signing a multimillion-dollar contract with the Huskies.

Williams’ decision to enter the transfer portal surprised many, including some of his teammates who were celebrating the life of UW women’s soccer player Mia Hamant. Hamant passed away after a battle with cancer, and Serena Williams shared his statement on social media during a celebration of life.

Former Washington State University and Seattle Seahawks player Michael Bumpus noted that this shift reflects a troubling trend in college sports.

“If I don’t like the deal they give me, I can stick it out and go somewhere else, or even if I sign a contract that’s supposed to be legally binding, I can still leave,” Bumpus said.

Paul Fogarty, a solicitor who specializes in contract law, said the situation was more of a standard contract issue than to do with a name, image and likeness (NIL) agreement.

“This isn’t really a NIL issue, it’s a regular contract issue,” Fogarty said. “But if he went to a school in another state, then there might be some jurisdictional battle over which law applies.”

As a result of this incident, Bumpus believes there should be more conversations about athlete contracts and the overall landscape of college sports.

“Now that you’ve committed to the college and they’ve committed to you, you’re right to have a public conversation, which I think is a little tricky because these kids don’t need to have these public conversations. Your mom, your dad, or maybe your agent is whispering in your ear. And in the middle of the night, you make a statement saying you know I’m going to be back in the portal,” Bumpus said.

KIRO 7 has reached out to the UW Athletic Department for comment on Williams’ transfer decision. They were unable to issue a statement at this time but said they may comment soon.
