USC basketball report, March 9 – Trojans suffer many losses

It’s been a tough week for the Trojans in college basketball, with both the men’s and women’s teams suffering tough losses. Jazzy Davidson and the Trojans were eliminated from the Big Ten Tournament but still have a decent shot at making the NCAA Tournament. Davidson’s shoulder injury is a story to watch. USC’s tournament standings could take a hit because of Davidson’s injury. The men’s team appears ready for the start of next season and is looking to get some guys healthy. In the NBA, rotation players have once again fully demonstrated their value.

Here are my top players on the USC basketball court last week, including both college and NBA players:

Women’s Basketball – London Jones

It was a struggle for the Trojans as they were eliminated as soon as they entered the game. Jazzy Davidson had his worst game of the season and the Trojans desperately needed offense. Londynn Jones was the top scorer against Washington with 19 points and an 8-9 record from the free throw line.

Men’s Basketball – Aliyah Arenas

It’s been a tough series of games, but in the final game of the regular season, Alija Arenas found some success. Entering Saturday’s game, Arenas scored 20 points and was 3-7 from behind the arc. In the game before Saturday, Arenas had 19 points and seven rebounds. Both games were his best performances since his stellar performance in February. The score may be the outcome of the final stretch, but it’s encouraging to see your freshman’s confidence return.

NBA – De’Anthony Melton

De’Anthony Melton played a key role in leading the Warriors to a victory over the Houston Rockets this past week. With Stephen Curry out, every win becomes more important. Melton had 23 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks. Melton was good for his team at times, scoring 20 points while being a very active defender. The Warriors have had their share of ups and downs this season. One thing that remains consistent is Melton’s value.

NBA – Isaiah Collier

It’s clear the Utah Jazz aren’t trying to win games this season, and this season they’ve been the poster child for the standings. Former Trojan Isaiah Collier had a stellar performance against their biggest rival in the tank, the Washington Wizards. I guess he didn’t get the memo. Collier once again performed well, scoring a season-high 27 points and 11 assists. He continues to show what he’s capable of with the Utah Jazz and his confidence must be through the roof at this point.

NBA – Evan Mobley

Evan was extremely efficient in this loss compared to a now healthy Boston Celtics team. Mobley had 24 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks. This is the Mobley the Cavaliers need; unfortunately, they are without Jarrett Allen for this game, who has been on a tear since James Harden was added. How far the Cavaliers go this season depends on Mobley and whether he can be the team’s No. 2 option. His performance on Sunday was encouraging, but the team needs him to be at his best more consistently.
