CBS added that the status of the Iranian ship and its crew was unclear.
A U.S. Navy ship opened fire on an Iranian warship that came too close to the USS Abraham Lincoln, CBS News reported late Thursday, citing U.S. officials with knowledge of the matter.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were “not authorized to speak publicly” about the incident, but noted that it happened earlier this week.
It was unclear which navy ship opened fire on the Iranian ship, according to officials, but they noted that multiple shots missed. The ship uses Mark-45 artillery.
A helicopter armed with Hellfire missiles was also airborne and successfully hit the ship with two missiles, officials said.
CBS added that the status of the Iranian ship and its crew was unclear.
