US issues urgent travel warning for Caribbean island; second highest risk level

The U.S. State Department is issuing a nationwide travel advisory to the popular Caribbean destination Grenada, citing “criminal risks.”

U.S. citizens are urged to “exercise increased caution” when traveling to Grenada as “violent crime can occur anywhere on the island.”

“U.S. citizens in Grenada have been the victims of armed robberies, assaults, burglaries, and rapes,” the U.S. State Department warned.

“In some cases, U.S. citizens were killed. U.S. police did not respond as quickly as people thought.”

The U.S. State Department lists Grenada as a Level 2 advisory — the second highest risk level.

The Level 2 advisory means travelers should be more aware of increased security threats when traveling to these areas.

The U.S. Department of State recommends that U.S. citizens wishing to travel to Grenada:

  • Be aware of your surroundings and keep a low profile.

  • Avoid walking or driving alone at night.

  • Do not resist robbery attempts or open doors to unknown visitors.

  • Students: If a campus emergency occurs, please contact campus security as they may be able to respond faster than local police.

  • Boaters: Be wary of strangers or boats approaching your boat.
