Here’s another addition to the New Orleans Saints receiving corps. Former Jacksonville State wide receiver Brock Rechsteiner signed with the Saints after a successful tryout at the team’s rookie minicamp. The son of pro wrestling legend Scott Steiner, Rechsteiner has the athletic gifts to set himself apart from the competition at training camp later this summer.
With that said, he’s facing an uphill battle. The Saints drafted three rookies in the first (Jordyn Tyson, out Arizona State), fourth (North Dakota State standout Bryce Lance), and sixth rounds (LSU return ace Barion Brown, who transferred from Kentucky) and brought back most of last season’s receiving corps. They also signed 6-foot-6 CFL star Damien Alford earlier this offseason.

Here’s how the depth chart may look at receiver now. It’s a long climb from the bottom, but the Saints didn’t sign Rechsteiner for no reason. He’s got just as strong a chance of making the team as half the guys on that list:

As a group, the Saints are significantly larger and faster at wide receiver than they were a year ago. They’ve gone from a starting trio of guys under 6-foot-1 (Olave, Rashid Shaheed, and Brandin Cooks) backed up by 30-year old Cedrick Wilson Jr. to a receiving corps featuring multiple targets over 6-foot-3 and plenty of speedsters with 4.4 speed. Vele, 28 years old, is the only one in the group older than 26. We’ll see what Rechsteiner can do when the Saints return to the practice field in just a few weeks.
