Unhappy meal for anyone in South Carolina McDonald’s when customer was shot

A South Carolina man is behind bars after a recent shooting at a McDonald’s restaurant that injured another man, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

Bishopville resident Dequa Davis, 31, was arrested Friday after a shooting at a McDonald’s at 1101 Sumter Highway, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. It is located in part of Lee County near Interstate 20 Exit 116.

Davis was charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and possession of a firearm by a felon, according to the release.

The victim was a McDonald’s customer when Davis entered the fast-food restaurant, the Sheriff’s Office said. Davis approached the victim and asked his name, according to the release.

Davis then pulled out a handgun and a struggle for the handgun ensued between him and the victim before entering the Sheriff’s Office. During the fight, the victim was shot, according to the release.

There is no information yet on how or if the men met before the shooting, or on Davis’ motive for pulling out the gun before the shooting.

The victim was taken to a local hospital by emergency services and is in stable condition, the Sheriff’s Office said. No further information was available on the victim’s health.

No other injuries were reported.

Davis left the McDonald’s but turned himself in to deputies at Lee County Sheriff’s Office headquarters shortly after the shooting, according to the release. He was taken to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said.

Lee County judicial records show Davis has not been released on bail and is scheduled to return to court on April 15.

Court records show that at the time of the McDonald shooting, Davis was out on bond stemming from a January 2024 arrest in which he was charged with conspiracy to commit murder. Court records show Bond was set at $50,000 following his last arrest and that charge is pending.

Davis previously pleaded guilty to drug charges in 2018 and 2019, as well as weapons charges (2018) and failure to stop (2022), according to court records. Court records show he was charged with murder in 2023, but that count was never prosecuted.
