Luckily for the former UFC champion, everything went the way he wanted. Strickland was able to defend all of Hernandez’s early takedown attempts, which was always the biggest key to “Fluffy’s” victory. This gives Strickland the opportunity to strike at will while moving his feet and playing great defense. Hernandez was chasing, but he just couldn’t find his range.
Strickland’s pressure caused severe internal knee injuries, severely injuring Hernandez in the third round. Hernandez tried to hide it, but Strickland sensed it was time to strike. Strickland landed punches and uppercuts along the cage, and “Fluffy” staggered before eventually falling to the canvas for cover. Strickland launched more offense before the referee finally intervened.
