UFC 325 fighter removed after weigh-in controversy releases statement

The boxer who attempted to use Daniel Cormier’s controversial towel trick ahead of UFC 325 has spoken out following the incident.

UFC 325 heads to Perth this Saturday, where featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski will defend his title against Diego Lopez in the main event.

This is the first UFC card to be held in Perth since 2023, with a number of fighters from Australia and New Zealand on the roster.

One of them is Aaron Tau, who hopes to earn a UFC contract by winning the Road to UFC Finals. Unfortunately for Tau, things didn’t go as planned.

Tau will face Namsrai Batbayer on the road to the UFC finals, and a win could earn him a contract with the promotion.

During Friday’s weigh-in, he tried an old-school trick popularized by former double champion Daniel Cormier, who used to use a towel as support while lifting weights. Instead of going that route, Tau leaned his elbows against the weigh box and ended up weighing in under 121 pounds. Officials then asked for a re-weigh, which showed he weighed 129 pounds.

Failed attempts resulted in his battle being canceled and being removed from the card.

“I need to apologize to my opponent, the UFC, my team and my fans. I thought I made it to the end and that I had a job, to make weight and fight. I didn’t do that. I’m sorry,” Tau said on Instagram.

UFC 325 poll results: Fans predict Alexander Volkanovski vs. Diego Lopez

In a pre-fight poll at Bloody Elbow, fans were asked to choose who they thought would take home the featherweight belt in Sydney.

Volkanovski has clearly beaten Lopez since last April, so it’s no surprise that more than 70% of those polled backed “The Great” to retain his title.

The poll attracted a total of 1,162 votes, of which just 331 believed Lopez would end Volkanovski’s reign on Saturday night.
