UConn wins 41st straight game, beating Butler 80-48

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Archie Forde scored 15 of his 17 points in the first half as No. 1 UConn beat visiting Butler 80-48 on Saturday and the Huskies have won their 41st straight game.

UConn sophomore star Sarah Strong, the Huskies’ leading scorer and rebounder, missed the Huskies’ first game since their two-season break. Blanca Quinonez and Caroline Ducharme, UConn’s top-scoring reserves, also missed the game. Zibell made his second start of the season. She tied Arnold with a team-high four steals.

Serah Williams, Ashlynn Shade and Allie Ziebell each scored 11 points, and KK Arnold scored 10 points for UConn (25-0, 14-0 Big East). The Huskies won their 62nd consecutive conference regular season game. All nine available UConn players had at least two field goals.

No. 12 Michigan Street 81, Payne Street 70

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (AP) — Grace VanSlooten had her fifth double-double of the season, Jalyn Brown scored 16 points and Rashunda Jones scored 14 in Michigan State’s comeback victory over Penn State.

Van Sloten was the leading scorer for the Spartans (20-4, 9-4 Big Ten) with 20 points and 14 rebounds. She made 9 of 18 field goals. Kennedy Blair contributed 12 points.

Kiyomi McMiller scored a career-high 37 points on 16-of-33 shooting for Penn State (8-16, 1-12). She shot 3-for-4 from beyond the arc and 2-for-4 from the free throw line. Freshman Tea Cleante scored 10 points for the Nittany Lions.

The Nittany Lions took their largest lead in the second quarter, going on a 6-0 run to take a 45-29 lead. The Spartans chased the score to 45-33 with the last two goals of the first half. After halftime, Michigan State went on a 16-0 run to end the third quarter and lead 54-52, while Penn State was held scoreless for more than six minutes.

Mac Miller scored 11 points in the fourth quarter, but Michigan State led by double digits in the final three minutes.

Michigan State’s 16-point comeback was its largest since 2005, when the Spartans beat Tennessee 68-64 to advance to the national championship game.

No. 15 Baylor 67, Arizona State 64

WACO, Texas (AP) — Talia Scott scored 17 points and Baylor earned a victory over Arizona State.

With 15 seconds left in the game, Gabby Elliott hit a jumper to pull Arizona State back to 65-64. Jana Van Gittenbeek hit two free throws for Baylor, but the Sun Devils committed a turnover on their final possession.

Arizona State went on a 12-2 run to take its only lead of the second half, 44-43, with three minutes left in the third quarter, but Baylor took a 53-48 advantage in the fourth quarter.

The Sun Devils tied the game again, but the Bears took the lead for good on a pair of free throws by Kayla Nelms with 5:43 left.

Scott missed 10 of 14 field goal attempts but made two 3-pointers and made all seven of his free throw attempts. Van Gittenbeek scored 13 points and Nems scored 12 for Baylor (21-4, 10-2 Big 12). Dariana Littlepage-Buggs grabbed 12 rebounds and scored six points.

Elliott scored 25 points on 9-for-17 shooting to lead Arizona State (19-6, 6-6). Jyah LoVett scored 16 points.

No. 18 Texas Tech 85, Houston 61

HOUSTON (AP) — Bailey Maupin scored 25 points and Texas Tech easily beat Houston.

Maupin went 7-for-13 from the field, hit five 3-pointers and made all six free throws for the Lady Raiders (22-3, 9-3 Big 12 Conference). She also had six rebounds.

Texas Tech’s Jalynn Bristow scored 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting, along with five rebounds and four blocks. Gemma Nunez finished with 13 points, seven assists and six steals.

Amirah Abdur-Rahim had 18 points and seven rebounds for the Cougars (7-16, 1-11), but she also had seven turnovers as Houston turned 21 turnovers into 40 points. Kierra Merchant scored 13 points and Briana Peguero had 12 points but had six turnovers.

Bristow and Maupin hit a 16-3 three-pointer in the final five minutes of the first quarter, giving Texas Tech a 21-12 lead.

No. 20 West Virginia 87, Arizona 68

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Kierra Wheeler scored 17 points and Sydney Shaw added 16 for West Virginia’s win over Arizona.

Wheeler had six rebounds and shot 8 of 11 from the field. Shaw made 6 of 10 shots from the field and 4 of 7 from beyond the arc. Jordan Harris scored 14 points. Gia Cooke scored 13 points off the bench and Celia Riviere scored 10 for West Virginia (20-5, 10-3 Big 12).

Tanyuel Welch scored 17 points for Arizona (11-12, 2-10). Daniah Trammell added 15.

The Mountaineers went on a 13-0 run in the first and second quarters and entered halftime up 50-26. A 9-0 run in the third quarter gave West Virginia a 74-40 lead.

No. 22 Maryland 78, Nebraska 60

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Isimenme Ozzie-Momodu scored 16 points on 7-for-8 shooting and Maryland held off Nebraska in the final seconds.

Oluchi Okananwa scored nine of the Terrapins’ 15 points in the first quarter, and Maryland (19-6, 7-6 Big Ten) led 30-17 at halftime and 45-28 in the second quarter.

Nebraska led 50-33 early in the third quarter, but Maryland responded with an Addi Mack steal layup and a Yarden Garzon three-pointer to push the deficit back to 52-33. The Terrapins won the third game 25-18 and extended their lead to more than 30 points on Rainey Welson’s 3-ball with 5:09 left.

Okananwa scored 14 points and 4 steals, Garzon scored 11 points and 6 assists, and Jinder Walker came off the bench to score 13 points. Wilson scored 13 points, a career high.

Ozzie Momodu grabbed nine rebounds and Maryland led 44-22 in the paint. The Terrapins shot 50 percent from the field, outrebounded Nebraska 39-26 and forced 22 turnovers.
