On February 9, Eugene police were investigating a potential drug-related medical issue at Churchill High School.
Melinda McLaughlin, a spokesperson for the Eugene Police Department, said dispatchers received a report of a student at the high school experiencing medical issues just after 11 a.m. A second student discovered a similar problem.
The Eugene Springfield Fire Department transported two students to a local hospital for treatment, and two other students were evaluated and treated at the school.
“While there is speculation as to the cause of the medical situation, the school and district do not have authoritative information on this and even if we received it we would not be able to share it because it is private student information,” 4J Communications Director Kelly McIver said via email. “If there is a public safety concern, it will be addressed by law enforcement after an appropriate investigation.”
Churchill High School Principal Kevin Rodemack said in an email to parents that the incident occurred during the second semester and that school health staff provided immediate care to the student before ESF arrived.
He said students were receiving appropriate care but the school would not respond to speculation or provide additional information that would violate student privacy laws.
“The safety and well-being of our students is our top priority, and our district staff are helping to provide the additional support necessary to address concerns about what may be a scary event for some,” Roedmark said.
