After news broke this week that former Jets head coach Robert Saleh had been hired by the Tennessee Titans, the New York Jets found themselves under indirect fire from NFL insider Ian Rapoport.

“Robert Saleh gets a second chance as a head coach – this time as a quarterback,” Rapoport posted on X.

The comment was widely interpreted as a dig at the Jets, suggesting Saleh lacked adequate quarterback play during his tenure in New York. While it appeared to be a defense of Saleh, the comment quickly sparked backlash online.

Rapoport’s post was flagged as a community note on Elon Musk’s platform as users pressed for more context. The note now reads: “Sam Darnold was the quarterback of the New York Jets when Robert Saleh was hired as head coach. Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas decided to trade him and select Zach Wilson.”

Wilson went on to start three seasons in New York, though he underperformed at the NFL level and was ultimately considered a draft bust. Darnold has had career resurgences in Minnesota and Seattle, where he will play in Sunday’s NFC Championship Game.

The Jets later turned to Aaron Rodgers under Saleh, but his brief tenure ended quickly, resulting in two potentially forgettable seasons for the four-time MVP. Saleh was fired in Week 6 of the 2024 season with the Jets going 20-36 as head coach.

But he has made a name for himself as a defensive coordinator. He’s been at the top of a San Francisco 49ers defense this season that has remained in the middle of the pack while dealing with serious injuries.
