Tulane promotes Will Hall to head coach, replacing Jon Sumrall

Tulane has promoted passing game coordinator Will Hall to head coach, according to Ross DeLenger of Yahoo Sports. The deal is now official and he was introduced to the squad this morning.

Hall will succeed Jon Sumrall, who recently became the head coach at the University of Florida. Hall became a target after LSU defensive coordinator Blake Baker elected to stay with the Tigers.

The 2024 class will be Hall’s second with the Green Wave, having first served as offensive coordinator in 2019 under former head coach Willie Fritz. Hall is also a former head coach at Southern Mississippi, West Georgia and West Alabama. Hall is 70-50 among the three schools.

Hall helped quarterback Jake Retzlaff have a productive season in his first season at Tulane. Retzlaff, who transferred from BYU at the end of this offseason, has thrown for 2,862 yards, 14 touchdowns and six interceptions. During his first tenure at Tulane, Hall also recruited and coached quarterback Michael Pratt, who currently ranks as the all-time leading passer with 9,602 yards.

Tulane defeated North Texas 34-21 to secure a spot in the College Football Playoff. This is the second time in the Green Wave’s history that they have won the American Division Championship and their fourth consecutive appearance in the division championship game.

Although this is Tulane’s first appearance in the College Football Playoff, the Green Wave have become one of the most successful of the five teams; Tulane has won 43 games over the past four seasons. Samral posted a 20-7 overall record and a 14-2 U.S. record in his two seasons with the team.

On December 20, Tulane will compete as the No. 11 seed in the first round of the College Football Playoff against No. 6 Mississippi. Hall will serve as head coach starting next season, while Samral will continue coaching Tulane through the postseason. Their first-round opponent will be without former head coach Lane Kiffin.

This will be Tulane’s second game against Mississippi State this season. In early September, the University of Mississippi defeated Tulane University 45-10. Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, running back Kewan Lacy and wide receiver Deuce Alexander lead the way for Mississippi State on offense. Retzlaff had his worst performance of the season against the Rebels, going 5-for-17 for 56 yards and a gain of 51 yards.
