Donald Trump has been widely criticized for comments on Saturday following news of the death of former special counsel Robert Mueller, in which the president said: “Well, I’m glad he’s dead. He can’t hurt innocent people anymore.”
“Whether you support the president or not, you know this comment is disgusting,” wrote former Marine and Senate candidate Seth Moulton.
“Robert Mueller earned the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for valor as a Marine who fought for this country. He was a great American,” he added. “Donald Trump is a terrible man and a disgrace to America.”
Unlike Trump, who defrauded the U.S. draft and military service five times, Mueller volunteered to serve in the Marine Corps. United States during the Vietnam War.
“God help us. This is shameful language coming from a Christian or anyone with a soul,” wrote James Martin, a Jesuit priest and editor-in-chief of America Magazine. “Celebrating the death of Charlie Kirk is just as wrong as celebrating the death of Robert Mueller. May they rest in peace. May we never forget that Jesus’ message was about mercy.”
“In an era when many young people, including President Trump, are trying to avoid serving in Vietnam, Mueller not only volunteered for the Marines after graduating from Princeton University, he also spent a year waiting for his injured knee to heal so he could serve. I’ve always thought that was the most compelling fact about him,” MS NOW’s Ken Dilanian wrote on X .
Liberal pundit Art Candee shared a screen recording of Trump’s post, which is still live on Truth Social.
“Trump and Robert Mueller were born two years apart, both came from wealthy families and both grew up in private schools,” noted author and activist Charlotte Clymer.
“Trump received five draft deferments while in Vietnam and became a parasitic real estate mogul. Mueller volunteered for the Army, graduated from Officer Candidate School and Ranger School, was wounded in combat, and received a Bronze Star for rescuing a wounded soldier under heavy enemy fire. It pretty much epitomizes the disparity between the two and Trump’s toxic jealousy of Mueller.”
“Robert Mueller has earned his place in history; Donald Trump has just proven that he belongs in the commentary box,” added artist Andrea Juncker on Bluesky. “Character cannot be faked and integrity cannot be bought. No matter how many buildings you write your name on. – Rest in peace to a true public servant.”
“I wish every Republican who was angry about people celebrating Charlie Kirk’s death would immediately condemn Trump for telling Robert Mueller ‘I’m glad he’s dead,'” wrote liberal commentator Harry Thiessen. “That’s disgusting.”
“This is disgusting and despicable. Trump is literally just celebrating the death of Robert Mueller. Mueller did a lot of good things for America,” podcaster Ed Krasenstein contributed.
“President Donald Trump cheered the death of American citizen, public servant and veteran Robert Mueller,” noted “Morning Joe” co-host Jonathan Lemire.
“We mourn the passing of Robert Mueller, a true public servant: a Bronze Star Vietnam veteran, a federal prosecutor, an FBI director, and an impartial special counsel. Yet the President of the United States disgustingly celebrates Mueller’s death simply because he exposed Trump’s efforts to steal the 2016 election,” New York Congressman Dan Goldman wrote. “Mueller and Trump represent the polar opposites of what a public servant should be. May Director Mueller rest in peace.”
MS NOW announced on Saturday that Muller had died at the age of 81. During his tenure at the FBI, he prosecuted Trump for Russia’s attack on the 2016 presidential election. The investigation and its conclusions, commonly known as the Mueller report, ultimately concluded that Trump could not be pardoned or charged with a crime.
