Trump says he may veto extension of Obamacare subsidies

Author: Julie Steenhuisen

Jan 11 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday he may veto legislation to extend federal health insurance subsidies, injecting new uncertainty into the debate between Republicans and Democrats in Congress and threatening to raise premiums for millions of Americans.

The Medicare tax break is set to expire at the end of 2025, causing insurance prices to rise significantly for millions of Americans.

The Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday passed Democratic-backed legislation to restore subsidies for the Affordable Care Act, with 17 Republican lawmakers joining Democrats.

The Senate, also controlled by Republicans, has rejected similar bills, but House passage could prompt a compromise.

Americans have until January 15 to sign up for this year’s ACA coverage, although the Trump administration may extend that deadline.
