Trump Loses It on Gavin Newsom Over ‘Inappropriate’ Deal With UK

president Donald Trump Unloaded at California Governor Gavin Newsome (D) on Monday dismissed his new clean energy deal with Britain as “inappropriate” and warned Britain’s leaders not to engage with Democrats.

Newsom’s comments came hours after he signed a memorandum of understanding with the British energy minister in London. Ed Miliband California and the United Kingdom have pledged to cooperate on clean energy technologies, including offshore wind. The agreement aims to expand access to the California market for British companies such as Octopus Energy and deepen research links between institutions on both sides of the Atlantic.

“The U.K. is in enough trouble without getting involved with Gavin Newsakam,” the president told Politico in an interview.

“Gavin is a loser. Everything he touches turns to trash. His state has gone to hell and his environmental efforts are a disaster,” he continued, adding that it would be “inappropriate” for Newsom to make such a deal and “it would be inappropriate for them to deal with him.”

Trump went on to warn: “People are leaving [California]. The worst thing Britain could do is get involved with Gavin. If they did to England what he did to California, it wouldn’t be a very successful venture. “

Newsom, widely seen as a potential Democratic contender in 2028, is visiting Europe in part to reassure allies uneasy about Trump’s foreign policies and climate change.

Earlier this year, the Trump administration withdrew the United States from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. California and the UK have committed to continue pursuing net-zero emissions targets under the treaty.
