Thunderbirds F-16 fighter jet crashes in California

A Thunderbirds F-16 fighter jet crashed and caught fire during a training exercise in California.

Video showed the plane nosediving near Trona Airport in remote eastern California on Wednesday.

The squadron said in a statement that the only pilot on board ejected safely and is now in stable condition.

The incident occurred during a training exercise by the U.S. Air Force’s elite demonstration squadron.

The U.S. Air Force demonstration unit Thunderbirds confirmed that one of its F-16C fighter jets crashed at 10:45 a.m. local time.

Videos shared on social media showed thick smoke and flames billowing from the ground after the crash.

The F-16-C Fighting Falcon is a compact single-seat fighter known for its ease of maneuvering and is the primary aircraft used by the Thunderbirds.

During air shows and airshows, the squadron typically flies six F-16s in a diamond formation of four aircraft, accompanied by two single aircraft.

The aircraft were also used in air-to-air combat, particularly during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The San Bernardino County Fire Department, where the crash occurred, said it was called to assist with incidents involving the crash.

The department added that the pilot was treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries before being taken to hospital.

The identity of the pilot and details of the circumstances leading up to the crash have not been released.

The U.S. Air Force said the incident is under investigation.
