According to reports, Gladbach sporting director Reuven Schröder is considering streamlining the squad in January. He sees high earners like Omlin as prime candidates to move on. Omlin has less than 18 months left on his contract, which runs until June 2027.
As a result, the Bundesliga side appear eager to take his salary off their books. “Bild” pointed out that he almost moved to the Premier League last summer. Leicester showed interest at the time but the deal fell through. This has landed the Swiss international in a tough spot in the footballing world.
Now, Sunderland can offer him a way out. German publications specifically called the Wearside club a realistic destination. This suggests negotiations may pick up pace before the window closes. It depends on whether Omlin takes a pay cut to fit in with Sunderland’s wage structure.

Sunderland’s goalkeeping situation has changed a lot. This follows their promotion to the top flight last May. The arrival of Dutch genius Robin Roefs in the summer for €13.5 million shook up the order. The move pushed local favorite Anthony Patterson to the bench. Rovers has been a star in goal. He has been a vital part of the Black Cats’ rise to the top half of the Premier League.
Still, this success has brought some problems. Patterson is too good to just sit around. He needs to get back on the pitch and find his rhythm with this month’s loan spell. Championship sides West Bromwich Albion or Millwall are currently linked with him.
If Patterson leaves, Regis LeBrice will be faced with a lack of depth. Relying solely on veteran Simon Moore or young academy players would be a huge risk. This is especially true for a team trying to qualify for Europe. This is what Jonas Omlin is about. He has an excellent record. He has captained the Bundesliga team and represented Switzerland in major tournaments.
Omlin provides a reliable, experienced team to support Roefs. This market presents a low-risk opportunity for athletic director Kristjaan Speakman. With Omlin not playing, his value has reportedly dropped to around €1.5 million. His lack of match fitness remains a concern. Even so, signing the Swiss goalkeeper would allow Patterson to develop elsewhere while keeping the Black Cats defensively safe for the rest of the season.
