Thibaut Courtois: “We Need to Improve Our Football”

After Real Madrid’s 2-0 win over Sevilla at the Santiago Bernabeu, Thibaut Courtois spoke to the media about the result, his performance, the level of the team, Kylian Mbappe and his experience on the pitch.

Importance of winning and areas for improvement

Courtois stressed the importance of a home win, while also admitting the team must improve its overall performance.

“It’s important to win at home but I think we need to improve our football.”

“We won with set pieces and penalties; we know we have to improve, but in moments like this it’s important to win.”

“We need to improve in 2026; a week off will be good for us. There are injuries and stuff like that, that’s why winning is so important.”

Performance and goalkeeping tables

When asked about his performance, Courtois said he felt good and credited the goalkeeping staff for his day-to-day performance.

“I feel good and I work hard every day with Lopis and the goalkeeper.”

“At 1-0 I made a few saves and that’s my job.”

Kylian Mbappe’s comments

Courtois also spoke about Kylian Mbappe and his impact on the team, praising his drive and ability.

“It’s impressive. He’s a very proactive guy, leading the attack with Vinny, Rodrygo and others.”

“Scoring 59 goals is not easy. He has quality, talent and it is difficult to stop him in training. I worked hard and we became competitive, but training with the best in the world makes you better.”

Looking ahead to 2026

Courtois made it clear that the team’s goal is still to win trophies, but improvements are needed.

“There will be trophies in 2026, but for that we have to raise our level.”

Played and captained at the Bernabeu

Looking back on the moment, Courtois described the match at the Santiago Bernabeu as a special moment in his career.

“This is my first time at the Bernabeu and it’s been my childhood dream to play here.”

“Being one of the captains is a huge honor. Coming from a small town in Belgium, it shows you have to dream big.”
