The MacBook Neo cuts too frequently, and too deep

Apple has launched MacBook Neo, a new entry-level laptop designed to make macOS more accessible to a wider audience. Starting at $599, the device is the cheapest MacBook the company has released in years and is aimed at students, first-time Mac users, and buyers considering a Chromebook or a low-end Windows laptop.

The laptop marks a significant shift in Apple’s strategy. Rather than relying on older models like the 2020 M1 MacBook Air as a budget option, Apple has launched a low-cost, dedicated MacBook designed for price-sensitive markets. The Neo comes with a 13-inch display, 8GB of RAM, storage options starting at 256GB, Magic Keyboard, 1080p webcam, and two USB-C ports.

However, this laptop also introduces some compromises that make its value proposition more complex than its price suggests.

A cheap MacBook built around iPhone chips

The biggest change in the MacBook Neo is the processor. The device runs an A18 Pro chip instead of Apple’s M-series chips used in modern Macs, which is the same processor used in the iPhone 16 Pro.

Apple’s reasoning seems simple: Using iPhone-class processors allows the company to reduce costs while still providing adequate performance for everyday computing tasks. Activities such as browsing, streaming, online courses, and light productivity workloads should run smoothly on Neo.

The laptop is also available in a variety of colors, including silver, indigo, blush, and tangerine, a design decision clearly aimed at younger buyers and students.

In theory, the Neo aims to bring more people into the Mac ecosystem by offering a modern MacBook at a much lower price than the MacBook Air.

Why Apple built Neo

Apple’s laptop product line has been steadily moving upmarket over the past few years. The latest MacBook Air models now start at a higher price due to increased memory and storage configurations. While this improves performance and longevity, it also puts the MacBook entry point away from buyers on a budget.

Neo fills this gap. By launching a $599 MacBook, Apple can compete more directly with Chromebooks and low-cost Windows laptops, especially in the education market where price is often the biggest factor.

The strategy could also expand Apple’s user base. Students or first-time buyers who start out with a Neo may eventually upgrade to a higher-end MacBook in the future.

Why Neo feels too compromising

Despite its attractive price, some of the MacBook Neo’s design choices feel too restrictive. Some of these restrictions appear primarily to protect the MacBook Air’s place in Apple’s product line.

For example, the base 256GB model doesn’t include Touch ID, which means buyers will have to upgrade to the 512GB version to get fingerprint authentication. The laptop also comes with a 20W charger, which is unusually slow for a laptop battery and can result in significantly longer charging times.

Memory is another issue. The Neo comes with 8GB of RAM and no upgrade options, which may limit performance as software requirements become more demanding over time. Reports also suggest that the device lacks faster connectivity features like Thunderbolt and instead includes a simpler USB-C port.

These compromises may make the Neo feel less future-proof than Apple’s other laptops.

So it does hurt deeply and too often

Apple has opened pre-orders for MacBook Neo, with shipments expected to begin on March 11.

The company is likely to heavily market the laptop to students and budget buyers, especially through educational discounts and campus plans.

Whether Neo is a major success will depend on how consumers weigh its price and limitations. If the device attracts enough new users to the Mac ecosystem, it could become one of Apple’s best-selling laptops.

In the meantime, many buyers may still find that spending a little more on the MacBook Air gets them a more powerful device. The Neo may be affordable, but the sheer number of compromises it makes shows that Apple engineered it carefully
