Target plans to cut toys from stores, and shoppers say it’s the final nail in the coffin

New quarter, new strategy.

Target announced in a March 3 blog post that its stores will focus on serving “busy families” to fuel growth in 2026.

No, the retailer will not reinstate the DEI initiatives that resulted in widespread boycotts and lost revenue. They were dealing with toys in the store.

Shoppers reacted to the switch on social media, saying it was the final nail in the coffin.

Target plans to cut its home product sales in half to offer a more curated selection while focusing more on merchandising and an upgraded guest experience.

Categories facing cuts include sporting goods, toys and electronics, which will be pulled from shelves to make room for groceries, health supplements, baby and beauty products.

The brand plans to open 30 new stores in 2026 and completely renovate 130 existing stores, while expanding the coverage of next-day delivery business.

Target is about to reduce its toy offerings, unnerving self-described soon-to-be ex-shoppers who rely on the store for dolls and action figures.

The news also sparked discussions about quality and pricing at Target.

X User @bloomingkyu linked Target’s updated plans to the merchandising trend of alienating children.

“It’s gotten so bad it’s even gone brick-and-mortar…Target has eliminated its kids’ toy section, and there are now a lot of brands targeting nostalgia rather than kids,” they wrote.

Reddit users pointed out another problem with Target’s new strategy — the plan doesn’t include any mention of price cuts.

In a thread posted on r/Anticonsump, commenters said they choose Target over competitors like Walmart because the products have been of higher quality in the past, so they don’t mind buying them at a slightly higher price.

Now shoppers are claiming lower quality and they’re unwilling to pay more.

“I used to shop at Target because most of the products were of higher quality than the equivalent at Walmart, so I was willing to pay a little more,” u/Accomplished_Mix7827 commented. “Now, the same cheap stuff has gone up in price for no reason. There’s no point in shopping at Target anymore.
