PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Investigators in New England have identified the suspect in the Brown University shooting and are looking into whether there is a connection to the murder of an award-winning nuclear scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology 50 miles away, sources tell Fox News.

He remains at large and authorities have obtained a warrant for his arrest, sources said.

The manhunt could cross state lines into Salem, New Hampshire, Boston 25 reported, citing its law enforcement sources. Fox News Digital could not immediately confirm the news.

Divisive images of Brown and MIT shooting victims

Split images show Brown University victims Ella Cook and Mohammad Aziz Umurzokov, as well as MIT professor Nuno Loureiro, who was killed in a separate shooting.

Earlier this week, FBI Boston Field Special Agent Ted Doakes told reporters that investigators were sharing intelligence about the two cases but had not yet drawn a clear connection.

Unconfirmed reports from Providence, Rhode Island, and Brookline, Massachusetts, both described Nissan Sentras at the scene, although they were described as having license plates from different states.

On Thursday, CBS regional affiliate WPRI-TV reported that senior law enforcement sources said they had uncovered evidence of a connection. It’s unclear what that evidence is.

A masked gunman burst into a lecture hall at Brown University in Providence around 4 p.m. on Saturday, killing two students and injuring nine others. Authorities said they recovered 9 mm bullet casings at the scene.

Minutes later Saturday, a person of interest was seen on surveillance video on the east side of Brown University’s campus.

Then, around 8:30 Monday night, Nuno F. Gomes Loureiro, a 47-year-old MIT professor, was found with multiple gunshot wounds in his Brookline apartment, just a short drive from campus. He was pronounced dead at the hospital the next morning.

Loureiro is a renowned nuclear physicist and director of MIT’s Center for Plasma Science and Fusion, and received a Presidential Award from the White House earlier this year in recognition of his research.

Investigators continued to search for clues in the homicide Thursday morning after MIT professor Nuno FG Loureiro was shot and killed in a Brookline apartment building earlier this week.

Authorities did not describe the weapon used to kill Loureiro.
