Sunday snowstorm in Milwaukee? Apple claims 20 inches, but NWS says pump the brakes

The Weather app on the iPhone says 20 inches of snow could fall in the Milwaukee area on Sunday, March 15, but the National Weather Service says it won’t be that soon.

“This is absolutely wrong,” Cameron Miller, a meteorologist with the Sullivan Weather Service office, said on March 10.

As Miller explained, the Apple app doesn’t generate weather forecasts based on multiple weather service computer models, but instead selects one model as “gospel.”

On top of that, the farther out the date is, the worse the computer model’s weather is. “It’s like a top,” Miller said. “The further back in time, the more the top shakes and the more unstable it becomes.”

The weather service is expecting snow on Sunday, but the earliest forecast calls for 3 to 5 inches of snow north of Milwaukee and near Interstate 94.
