Steelers GM hints at extension for TE Darnell Washington

Last season, Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Darnell Washington quickly became a favorite among fans and former offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. That came at the expense of tight end Pat Frelmuth. Washington suffered a broken forearm in Week 17 and missed the final game of the season and the team’s only playoff game.

When Steelers general manager Omar Khan addressed the media at the NFL Scouting Combine on Tuesday, he was asked about Washington’s injury situation and his role with the team. Khan gushed about Washington, leading us to believe he might be the team’s top choice for an extension this offseason.

“I want 20 Darnell Washingtons,” Khan said.

Thankfully, Khan also addressed Freiermuth and acknowledged that he will play a larger role in an offense this season that is hurting the way Freiermuth is used in 2025.

In 2025, Washington had 31 catches for 364 yards and Freiermuth had 41 catches for 486 yards. While we appreciate the excitement surrounding Washington and his impact in the run game as a blocker, he’s not the team’s top tight end and his mishandling of the position really hampered the offense last season.
