Bethesda’s sci-fi RPG “Starfield” will be released on Xbox Series S/X and PC in 2023, and will reportedly come to PS5 next year. The game’s release on PlayStation is said to coincide with the release of the game’s second expansion pack. After Microsoft pivoted to releasing Xbox games on Sony’s platform, there were rumors that Starfield would launch on PS5. While Bethesda has yet to confirm a PS5 version is in development, Xbox CEO Phil Spencer said the RPG could eventually be released on the platform.
“Starfield” will be released on PS5 in 2026
According to MP1st, Microsoft plans to bring “Starfield” to PS5 in the spring of 2026 (mid-March to mid-June). The report cited sources as saying that Starfield’s PS5 release date has been pushed back from 2025, in part due to poor sales of its first expansion, Shattered Space.
The Xbox parent company is reportedly aiming to release Starfield’s second expansion pack and other quality-of-life updates alongside the PS5 version of the game. However, Microsoft doesn’t plan to make an official announcement anytime soon. The company is not expected to share any updates on Starfield at Gamescom this month, the report said.
Xbox games released on PS5
Earlier this year, Microsoft Games CEO Phil Spencer refused to rule out the possibility of “Starfield” being released on rival platforms such as PS5 in an interview, doubling down on Microsoft’s multi-platform release strategy. When asked if he could confirm that Starfield would remain an Xbox console exclusive, the executive responded “no” at the time. “I wouldn’t pick any particular game – and this goes back to my ‘red line’ answer – like there’s no reason for me to put a fence around any game and say ‘this game isn’t going to go to a place where it’s going to find players and it’s not going to be a commercial success for us,'” he said in the interview.
Since announcing last year that it would release some first-party games on PS5, Microsoft has achieved encouraging results. Playground Games’ Forza Horizon 5, previously an Xbox and PC exclusive, launched on PS5 in April and reportedly became the platform’s best-selling game of 2025. Bethesda’s “The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered” was also one of the best-selling games on the PlayStation Store in April.
Meanwhile, more Xbox games will be released on PS5 this year. Gears of War: Reloaded, a remake of the original game, will launch simultaneously on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X on August 26, 2025. Prior to this, the enhanced version of “Senna’s Legend: Hellblade 2” will be released on PS5 on August 12.
A recent report also claimed that the upcoming game Gears of War: E-Day, the next mainline game in the Gears of War series, and State of Decay 3 will be released on PS5 next year.
Starfield releases on September 6, 2023 on PC and Xbox Series S/X. The game’s Shattered Space expansion pack launched a year later.
